Learning
Primary
As you walk through the corridors and learning spaces of our Primary School, you’ll immediately feel the warm, welcoming atmosphere. Here, both students and teachers are actively engaged in high-quality, inquiry-based learning that engages, empowers and inspires.
Primary students spend most of their day with a homeroom teacher and teacher assistant (TA) who facilitate learning in Literacy, Mathematics, and the Programme of Inquiry, which also includes Science and Social Studies. Teachers and TAs work collaboratively to design interactive, relevant, and thought-provoking units that encourage student exploration and voice, while ensuring that essential skills, concepts, and knowledge are thoroughly
In addition to their core subjects, students participate in various single-subject classes such as Visual Arts, Performing Arts, and Physical Education. They also attend World Languages (Spanish, French, Azerbaijani or English). Where possible, we also offer support for Mother Tongue languages.
| Subjects | Description |
|---|---|
| Mathematics | The PYP Maths curriculum at TISA aligns with the AERO Math Standards. These standards communicate what is expected of students at each grade level, ensuring that we are working toward shared goals in each year of the programme. |
| English Language Arts | The English Language Arts curriculum at TISA integrates the AERO ELA Standards, setting clear expectations for students at every grade level. These standards guide our teaching and learning, ensuring that we are consistently working toward common goals throughout each year of the program. |
| Science | The PYP Science curriculum at TISA is guided by the ACARA Standards, which outline clear expectations for student learning at each grade level. These standards help ensure that students progress toward shared learning goals across the programme. In addition, Social Studies standards are embedded within the Programme of Inquiry and aligned with the IB Transdisciplinary Themes. This integrated approach fosters critical thinking and cultural awareness through engaging, inquiry-driven experiences. Concepts connected to social studies are explored through the transdisciplinary themes—such as Where We Are in Place and Time, How We Organize Ourselves, and Sharing the Planet—which provide meaningful, globally relevant contexts for learning. |
| Social Studies | In alignment with Azerbaijani government regulations, all Azerbaijani nationals participate in weekly Azerbaijani language lessons and work toward the national standards. In addition, the school community engages in cultural learning experiences that promote appreciation of Azerbaijani heritage and traditions. All students take part in events and educational activities connected to national holidays and celebrations, fostering respect for local culture and strengthening connections to the host country.
TISA offers a comprehensive English as an Additional Language (EAL) program for new-to-English students. Our EAL standards and assessments are aligned with WIDA, ensuring a rigorous and supportive learning environment. |
| Languages | Starting from Grade 2, learners can choose between French and Spanish as an additional World Language. This programme enables students to develop language skills by communicating in various contexts, exploring grammatical structures, and using the language to broaden their intercultural understanding and cultivate international-mindedness.
In addition, TISA offers a Mother Tongue program, allowing students to maintain and develop their native language skills, further enhancing their linguistic and cultural identity. |
| Single Subjects | In Primary school, students attend Visual Arts, Physical Education, Performing Arts, World Languages (from Grade 2), Azerbaijani, and the Library. Whenever possible, these Single Subjects are incorporated into our units of inquiry to ensure cross-curricular connections. |
